Standing Up for Retired Persons: A Conversation with Ashley Fox

Ashley Fox, RPN, LNC, and Community Outreach Coordinator at Promyse Home Care, is passionate about senior care!

We met with Ashley at Promyse Home Care to discuss what motivates her to work with geriatric patients and do good for the world in this venue!

Q: What inspires you to get up every morning?

Ashley: The chance to make a difference in someone’s life.

Q: Why did you decide to specialize in post-retirement and in-home care?

Ashley: After graduation, I became a Charge Nurse at a local retirement home. I truly enjoyed it, so I decided to stay in geriatrics! I worked for a few other homes in front-line nursing before becoming a Director of Care at a local home with Independent Living and Assisted Living care. I made the change to the community because I worked as a Personal Support Worker in the community for many years and enjoyed it – I was ready for a change, and I LOVE it!

Q: If you could change one thing about your life, what would it be and why?

Ashley: I don’t think I would change anything because it has all made me into the person I am today.

Q: If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be and why?

Ashley: Funding! If I could change anything – I would ensure more funding for community services, retirement home programs and local long-term care homes. Our seniors deserve the best!

Q: If you could change one thing about our current healthcare system, what would it be?

Ashley: Putting the patient at the center of everything within the system. Our current system is not modernized, and this can make it difficult for essential caregivers to navigate appointments and reports and make decisions with their loved one about their care in real-time. Our system is overwhelmed at times, which means the patient can sometimes unintentionally be removed from the center of care.

Q: Who is your biggest inspiration?

Ashley: I have too many – I really look up to many nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, doctors, and other health professionals in my field. Each day I am learning more from them to be the best nurse I can be and provide the best care to my patients.
